Benji does the double

Solihull 9 Ball Series Event 3 is in the books. On Saturday 20th April 2019, 41 registered players made the journey to Rileys Sports Bar, Solihull, all with the intention of claiming the Event 3 title, or at least a share of the 1000 prize fund.

With the Grand Final only 9 weeks away players were required to have played a minimum of 3 events to meet qualification criteria. All knew that a good run in the tournament could well leave them in pole position for one of the sixteen sought after spots.

Solihull 9 Ball is always happy to welcome newcomers to our tournaments and several impressed during their series debuts. Three wins saw Chris Parker safely through to the last sixteen while Danny Orme also battled his way to the single elimination stage undefeated. Terry Davies was downed 7-3 Kev Simpson but still managed to make the last 16 thanks to a victory over Ryan Coton. Jimmy Mole has always supported 9 Ball events at this venue so it was good to see him in good form early on with wins over Karl Hooley and Solihull 9 Balls own Daryl Garland. Unfortunately for Jimmy he was sent to the losers side Benji Buckley before his involvement was ended completely another debutant, local 8 baller Nick Birch. Jan Ibrahim also impressed on his way to the single elimination phase.

Chris Parker continued his great run with a 7-6 triumph over David Hine. Pre-tournament favourites Benji Buckley and Stewart Colclough made light work of their respective oponents while, in the tie of the round, Darren Saxbested Alan Coton 7-6. Roy Kimberley had progressed to the last 16 via the most unusual circumstances. Two forfeits saw him advance to the winners qualification round where he met, and disposed of, Apostolis Harmas. However, Nick Birch put an end to Roys tournament in a 7-6 nail biter that would ensure Nick would finish in the money in his first Solihull 9 Ball tournament. Kev Simpson and Dave Evans advanced to the quarter finals in convincing fashion while Terry Davies completed the quarter final line-up at the expense of Danny Orme.

Benji Buckley shut out Chris Parker in the first of our quarter-finals while Terry Davies was dominant in his victory over Stewart Colclough. Kev Simpson saw off Nick Birch 7-5 and Darren Saxby’s outstanding form continued as he defeated Dave Evans the same score.

So it was time for the semi finals where Event 1 winner Benji Buckley faced off against Kev Simpson and Darren Saxwould meet Welshman Terry Davies. Buckley progressed, giving up only two racks to Simpson in an emphatic display. Semi final two would be a much closer affair with Saxtaking the game 7-5.

Our Event 3 final would be contested two players who have been ever-present at our events this season. Benji looked to be back in the form that helped him take the Event 1 title while Darren easily surpassed his previous performances en route to his first series final. Unfortunately for Darren the task of defeating Benji was a step too far on this occasion. Benji ran out a convincing winner (7-3) and cemented his place in the Grand Final in the process.

Congratulations to Benji on his second tournament victory and a fine return to form. Hard luck to Darren Saxwho will hopefully take a lot of confidence from reaching his first series final. Thanks to everyone who supported this event, from all the players through to our generous sponsors Rileys, Shark Rack and Taom Billiards. We would also like to express our gratitude to Luke Hart for doing a stellar job running the tournament desk while Andy and Daryl were playing. Top man.

Event Four is on 18th May. See you there
